Relationship of Anger and Mental Health for Spinal Cord Injuries

Abstract
The aims of present study were to investigate anger level and mental health level depending on the period of injury and to inquire into the relationship between anger level and mental health problem to examine the psychological aspect in the process of rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injuries. To do this, we conducted a survey of anger experience, and mental health problem on people with spinal cord injuries participating in various kinds of physical clubs of hospitals in Changwon, Incheon, Busan, Daegu, and Seoul, and members of related internet cafe. 262 questionnaires of the spinal cord injured and 153 questionnaires of the control group, total 415 were responed on the questionnaire. The measuring instruments consisted of state anger and trait anger scales, the brief symptom inventory(BSI) among Korean adaptation of the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory(STAXI-K). The major findings of this study are as follows. First, the anger level was the highest of primary people with spinal cord injuries, and longer period the score decreased. Second, the active style score and support-seeking style score was the lower of primary people with spinal cord injuries, and longer period the score increased. Third, people with spinal cord injuries was the highest of primary people with spinal cord injuries, in the exception of obsession and paranoia, from all the sub-factors. Forth, the anger experience of people with spinal cord injuries was positively correlated to all the factors of mental health problems. Finally, we discussed the implications and limitations of this study and provided suggestions for future studies.
